For instance, during peak operations, we process over 17,000 transactions every second, totaling more than a billion daily, all while maintaining an impressive average response time of under 0.3 seconds.
The Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) division is dedicated to delivering a secure, self-service, and cost-efficient database platform utilizing Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, and Oracle technologies. This department oversees the entire lifecycle of these databases, from automation development to operational management, within a critical and highly available enterprise framework. To ensure continuous service, the DBaaS team operates in a 24x7 'follow-the-sun' model, with members located in various global hubs.
Role Summary
The Database Operations Manager is tasked with the deployment, maintenance, performance, integrity, and security of the Oracle and MariaDB database platforms. This role involves coordinating with internal team members and application Software Reliability Engineers to manage all operational aspects of Oracle and MariaDB. Collaboration with Research & Development and Product Management is essential to enhance database automation and performance.
The Manager is also responsible for the performance and outcomes of a sizable team, influencing resource allocation, budget management, and policy development while establishing clear growth plans for team members. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the operational environment and customer needs, with the ability to make complex decisions autonomously, escalating issues as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the stability, operability, and compliance of the Oracle and MariaDB database platforms, including incident resolution and on-call management in a 24x7 operational context.
- Plan the deployment of database clusters based on customer specifications, focusing on high availability and fault tolerance.
- Oversee daily operations within the area of expertise, managing people and coordinating the team while aligning with DBaaS strategy and operational challenges.
- Collaborate closely with DBaaS operations, development, and product management teams to continuously improve database automation and tooling based on operational insights.
- Accountable for the operational performance of a large team, ensuring alignment with departmental and company objectives, while driving continuous improvement.
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members, fostering a culture of engagement and providing guidance.
- Actively contribute to the strategic direction of the DBaaS department.
- Demonstrate a high level of autonomy in decision-making, following senior management directives and escalating issues when needed.
- Facilitate effective communication within the DBaaS department and with external peers.
Relevant Experience
- 8+ years of experience managing software operations in a critical, highly available enterprise environment.
- 5+ years in a leadership or people management role.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification in relational databases or programming is advantageous.
Skills
- Extensive experience in people management.
- Proven experience supporting critical production workloads.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential issues.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other leaders and demonstrate independence.
- Experience working in diverse and multicultural environments.
- Knowledge of Oracle database technologies (19c, 23ai) in a Linux setting.
- Experience with MySQL/MariaDB (10.x+) is a plus.
- Familiarity with database automation tools (Ansible, Python, shell, etc.) is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure is a plus.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required, both written and verbal.
