For instance, at peak times, the company processes over 17,000 transactions per second, totaling more than a billion daily, all while maintaining an average response time of under 0.3 seconds.
The Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) department is dedicated to delivering a secure, self-service, and cost-efficient database platform utilizing Microsoft SQL Server, MariaDB, and Oracle technologies. This department oversees every aspect of the database lifecycle, from automation development to operational management, within a critical and highly available enterprise environment. To ensure effective service delivery, the DBaaS department operates on a 24x7 basis, with team members located globally.
Summary of the Role
The Oracle / MariaDB Operations Manager is tasked with overseeing the deployment, maintenance, performance, integrity, and security of the Oracle and MariaDB database platforms. This role involves coordinating team efforts internally and collaborating with application Software Reliability Engineers on all operational aspects. Additionally, the manager partners with Research & Development and Product Management teams to optimize database automation and performance.
This position is also responsible for the performance and outcomes of a large team, influencing resource allocation, budget management, and policy planning, while establishing clear development objectives for team members. The manager contributes to the strategic direction of the DBaaS department, drawing from a comprehensive understanding of the operational environment and customer needs. This role requires complex decision-making capabilities and a high degree of autonomy, with the expectation to escalate issues as necessary.
Major Responsibilities & Expectations
- Ensure the stability, operability, and compliance of the Oracle / MariaDB database platform, including incident resolution and on-call management in a 24x7 operational setting.
- Plan and execute the deployment of database clusters based on customer requirements, focusing on high availability and fault tolerance.
- Oversee daily operations within the area of expertise, manage people-related activities, and coordinate team efforts, aligning with the DBaaS strategy.
- Collaborate closely with DBaaS operations, development, and product management teams to enhance the automation and tooling ecosystems based on operational feedback.
- Accountable for the operational performance of a large team, ensuring alignment with departmental and company objectives while driving continuous improvement.
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members, fostering a culture of engagement and providing guidance.
- Actively contribute to the strategic goals of the DBaaS department.
- Demonstrate a high level of autonomy while adhering to senior management directives and escalating issues when necessary.
- Facilitate effective communication within the DBaaS department and with external peers.
Relevant Job Experiences
- 8+ years of experience managing software operations in a critical, highly available enterprise environment.
- 5+ years in a leadership or people management role.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Certification in relational databases and/or programming is advantageous.
Skills & Know-How
- Extensive experience in people and stream management.
- Proven track record in supporting critical production workloads.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proactive approach to mitigating potential issues.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with other leaders and demonstrate independence.
- Experience working in diverse and multicultural environments.
- Knowledge of Oracle database technologies (19c, 23ai) in a Linux setting.
- Experience with MySQL / MariaDB (10.x+) is a plus.
- Familiarity with database automation tools (Ansible, Python, shell, etc.) is beneficial.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and/or relevant certification is advantageous.

- Fluency in English is required, both written and verbal.
