The DWD offers research fellowships for early career scientists to engage in a significant research initiative during their tenure at ECMWF. The selected fellows will be stationed at the ECMWF facilities in Bonn, Germany, for a period of two years.

The Junior Research Fellow will collaborate with scientists from various divisions within ECMWF. This role will also involve support and partnership with the Centre for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis, which includes institutions such as the University of Bonn, University of Cologne, and Forschungszentrum Julich.

A key aspect of the STEP UP Fellowship program is the comprehensive training provided by DWD, aimed at enhancing the professional and career development of the Early Career Fellows throughout their engagement with ECMWF.

Position Overview

This role is situated within the Earth System Assimilation Section of the Research Department at ECMWF. The Fellow will engage with the Land Modelling and Coupled Assimilation Teams in the Research Department, as well as the Hydrological Monitoring and Forecasting Team in the Forecasts and Services Department.

The primary objective of this position is to evaluate the influence of land data assimilation on river discharge and related flood forecasting within the ECMWF land-hydrology framework.

Main Responsibilities
  • Design and execute data denial and forecasting experiments utilizing the coupled ECL and CaMaFlood systems to ascertain the impact of observations and data assimilation on flood forecasting.
  • Analyze experiment outcomes using in-situ river discharge observations.
  • Evaluate the influence of each type of land surface observation (e.g., soil moisture and snow observations) individually.
  • Document and communicate scientific findings through technical reports, journal articles, conferences, and meetings.
Qualifications

Education

  • A completed scientific or technical university degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma), ideally in fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, environmental sciences, hydrology, oceanography, or meteorology.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English (minimum B2 CEFR).

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Desirable expertise in land data assimilation, land surface modeling, and/or hydrological data analysis.
  • Experience in numerical modeling and/or data assimilation is advantageous.
  • Background in global or regional simulations with weather or climate models is preferred.
  • Knowledge of written and spoken German (Level A2 CEFR) is beneficial.
  • Experience collaborating with international organizations is a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster a positive and trusting environment during discussions.
  • Proactive approach and ability to work collaboratively and constructively.
  • Capacity to work independently and take initiative in problem-solving within the designated field.
  • Analytical thinking to evaluate various factors and make informed judgments.
  • Empathy to recognize and accommodate the diverse needs of participants in group settings.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills to manage a variety of tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Intercultural competence essential for successful collaboration in international teams and organizations.
Compensation and Benefits

The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of 2,900 Euro for a duration of two years, along with individual funding for travel and publication expenses in accordance with the funding guidelines.
