PhD Research Fellowship in Social Ethics

Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn Vollzeit
Position Overview:
The Faculty of Protestant Theology at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is seeking candidates for two PhD Position/Junior Research Fellow roles (m/f/d) at 75% capacity.

This position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for an additional year as part of the ERC project.

The Department of Social Ethics focuses on teaching and research related to ethical, societal, and governance challenges arising from emerging technologies.

As part of the new ERC project SIMTWIN, we are looking for individuals interested in collaborating in Bonn.

SIMTWIN aims to systematically identify and analyze the ethical and societal implications associated with the use of Digital Twins in healthcare.

While many aspects of health simulations, such as Digital Twins, are still developing, it is clear that these innovative technologies have the potential to transform existing notions of health, illness, controllability, vulnerability, representation, and embodiment.

For instance, if every individual possessed a 'digital body' capable of predicting health events in real-time, it would fundamentally alter their understanding of health, fostering new interactions between their physical and digital selves.

This shift would also influence medical practices and health policy considerations. Changes in these core normative concepts will significantly impact current national and European healthcare governance frameworks.

SIMTWIN's primary goal is to conduct a thorough and detailed examination of the normative challenges involved, ultimately developing a cohesive theory of health simulations.

By proposing an empirically grounded and normatively sound framework for ethical and societal evaluation of this technology, SIMTWIN will facilitate the design of practical modes of controllability for the application of Digital Twins in health.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research within the ERC project SIMTWIN
- Develop and explore the normative dimensions (justice, solidarity, vulnerability) of Digital Twins
- Publish independently in international academic journals

Candidate Profile:
- A Master's degree in ethics, theology, philosophy, social sciences, or law
- Published research in AI Ethics, social ethics, technology ethics, or fundamental ethical inquiries
- Familiarity with contemporary methods and theories in hermeneutics, science and society studies, empirical ethics, and governance
- Enthusiasm for current transdisciplinary research topics and methodological debates in AI ethics
- Excellent proficiency in oral and written English

What We Offer:
- A diverse and stimulating role with one of the largest employers in the region, providing the autonomy to pursue your own research in a research-oriented environment
- An inspiring and motivating workplace atmosphere
- Company pension scheme (VBL)
- Access to various university sports programs
- Excellent transport links and affordable parking options
- Remuneration in accordance with remuneration group 13 TV-L
