Inpatient Care Technician for Acute Dialysis

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Acute Inpatient Patient Care Technician plays a vital role within the hemodialysis healthcare team, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective dialysis treatment for designated patients. This role adheres to the policies, procedures, and training of Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), while also complying with the regulations established by relevant corporate, state, and federal agencies.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (FMCNA RN), ensuring all incidents, information, complaints, or issues are promptly reported and documented.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and hygienic work environment, supporting FMCNA's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and participating in activities aimed at improving patient satisfaction.
- Contribute to achieving Total Area Productivity (TAP) goals.
- With verified competency, prepare and prime equipment for renal replacement therapies as directed by the Fresenius Nurse.
- Greet assigned patients and check on their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any concerns to the FMCNA RN.
- Assess vascular access for functionality and communicate any irregularities to the FMCNA RN.
- Measure and record pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reporting any anomalies to the FMCNA RN.
- Perform vascular access cannulation, reporting any challenges or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Accurately program dialysis machines for individual patients, including Ultrafiltration (UF) goals and treatment parameters as prescribed.
- Ensure safety alarms are appropriately set, including narrow venous limits (NVL 160).
- Document vital signs and treatment details on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with proper identification.
- Initiate renal replacement treatment according to physician orders, including setting blood flow and dialysate flow rates.
- Collect and label specimens, ensuring timely laboratory delivery in accordance with facility policy.
- Address intradialytic issues as directed by physician orders or FMCNA RN, monitoring patient responses and reporting any unusual findings.
- Obtain vital signs prior to treatment discontinuation and complete necessary documentation.
- Report any changes or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Document interventions for unusual patient conditions and record patient responses.
- Monitor patients' vascular access during treatment, providing necessary interventions and reporting any irregularities to the FMCNA RN.
- Follow established procedures for discontinuing dialysis treatment.
- Evaluate patients prior to terminating venous access, ensuring proper hemostasis and dressing application, and report any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Conduct pre and post-dialysis evaluations, documenting weight and vital signs accurately.
- Perform additional duties as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

- Daily responsibilities include desk work, patient interaction, and collaboration with facility staff and physicians.
- The role requires travel between assigned facilities and various community locations.
- Attendance at meetings may be necessary.
- The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
- This position involves direct patient care, which includes heavy lifting and assisting with patient mobility. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may assist with heavier tasks.
- Frequent prolonged standing is required, and the employee must be able to bend over. Occasionally, assistance may be needed for moving equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. and lifting chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. to heights of 5 feet.
- A two-person assist program and material handling devices are available for heavier items.
EDUCATION:
A High School Diploma is required.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 1 - 2 years of relevant experience.
- Certification in Clinical Hemodialysis (CCHT) is required.
