Inpatient Dialysis Care Technician

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The role involves being an integral part of the hemodialysis healthcare team, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective dialysis treatment for designated patients. This is done in alignment with the policies, procedures, and training provided by Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), while adhering to the regulations established by relevant corporate, state, and federal agencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver patient care under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse (FMCNA RN) or in close proximity to an RN in a treatment setting. It is essential to report and document any new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, or issues to the RN.
- Foster and assist in maintaining a safe and hygienic working environment. Support FMCNA's commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and engage in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) initiatives, including those aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction.
- Contribute to achieving Total Area Productivity (TAP) goals.
- With appropriate training and documented competency, may prepare and prime equipment as directed by the Fresenius Nurse for various renal replacement therapies.
- Greet assigned patients and inquire about their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any complaints or observations to the FMCNA RN.
- Assess vascular access for patency and communicate any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Collect necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reporting any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Perform vascular access cannulation and communicate any difficulties or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Responsible for the calculation and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming, including Ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment duration, Sodium (Na) modeling, and UF modeling as prescribed.
- Ensure that appropriate safety alarms are activated, including narrow venous limits (NVL 160).
- Accurately document vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with proper identification.
- Initiate renal replacement therapy according to prescribed orders, including setting blood flow rate (QB) and dialysate flow rate (QD) as directed by the attending nephrologist.
- Collect and label specimens, ensuring timely delivery to the laboratory in accordance with facility policy.
- Monitor intradialytic issues and provide interventions as directed by physician's orders or FMCNA RN.
- Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform all necessary functions for the discontinuation of treatment, including documentation.
- Report any changes or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Document any interventions for unusual patient status and the patients' responses to those interventions.
- Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment, including monitoring arterial and venous pressures, providing appropriate interventions as needed, and documenting any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Discontinue dialysis treatment following established protocols.
- Assess the patient prior to the termination of venous access, including standing and sitting blood pressures. Ensure hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings. Evaluate the patient before discharge and report any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Conduct and document pre and post-dialysis evaluations, including weight and vital signs with proper identification.
- Perform other duties as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

- Daily tasks include desk and personal computer work, interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians.
- The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community.
- Attendance at meetings may be necessary.
- The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
- This position involves direct patient care that frequently requires heavy lifting and moving of patients, as well as assisting with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may provide assistance.
- Frequent, prolonged periods of standing are required, and the employee must be able to bend over. Occasionally, assistance may be needed in moving machines and equipment weighing up to 200 lbs., and lifting chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. up to 5 feet high.
- A two-person assist program and material assist devices are available for heavier items.
EDUCATION:
A High School Diploma is required.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 1 - 2 years of relevant experience.
- Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) certification is required.
