OBJECTIVE:

The Clinical Nurse (Inpatient Dialysis Specialist) role is an introductory position within the Clinical Advancement Program for Registered Nurses. This role is essential for ensuring the delivery and management of high-quality patient care, which includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients.

As a vital member of the Kidney Disease healthcare team, the Clinical Nurse engages in decision-making processes, educational initiatives, leadership responsibilities, and quality enhancement activities aimed at improving patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.

All responsibilities are to be executed in alignment with Fresenius Medical Care's policies, procedures, and standards of nursing practice, as well as state and federal regulations.

  • Executes all fundamental duties under the supervision of the Program Manager and receives guidance from the Educator, Preceptor, or a more experienced Inpatient Services RN for the initial six months of employment.
  • Expected to fulfill the criteria necessary to progress to the next Inpatient CAP level within a 24-month timeframe from the start date.
  • Conducts ongoing, systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after treatment for assigned patients, documenting findings in the patient medical record, and adjusting treatment plans as necessary while notifying relevant healthcare personnel.
  • Evaluates daily patient care requirements and collaborates with both direct and ancillary care staff as needed.
  • Initiates and coordinates communication with both Fresenius and non-Fresenius dialysis providers, as well as appropriate hospital staff, to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Adheres to established protocols for emergency response measures.
  • Delegates suitable tasks to direct patient care staff, including but not limited to Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Patient Care Technicians.
  • Monitors patient care staff to ensure compliance with proper techniques and adherence to Fresenius policies and procedures.
  • Advocates for infection control, equipment safety, and environmental safety.
  • Assesses and documents the educational needs of patients and families to provide initial and ongoing education.
  • Instructs hospital staff on specialized care related to renal replacement and apheresis therapies.
  • Initiates, documents, and completes ongoing Quality Assurance and Improvement activities, including monthly reports as directed by management.
  • Serves as a resource for the healthcare team and participates in the training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Attends all required staff meetings as scheduled.
  • May be assigned to assist in outpatient facilities as needed.
  • Supports and promotes the mission, vision, values, and customer service philosophy of Fresenius Medical Care.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by management within the framework of state, federal, and contractual standards.

  • Areas of practice are diverse, including but not limited to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, and apheresis.
  • This position involves direct patient care that may require heavy lifting and moving of patients, as well as assisting with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may provide assistance. Frequent prolonged periods of standing are required, and the employee must be able to bend over. Occasionally, the employee may need to move, with assistance, machines and equipment weighing up to 200 lbs., and may lift chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet. The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels. Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
  • May be required to perform essential functions of this position in other locations with similar physical demands and working conditions.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation is required (including nights, weekends, or as defined by program needs).

SUPERVISION:

  • Responsible for overseeing Patient Care Technicians and LPNs as a designated Nurse in charge, following successful completion of all required education and modality-specific training for new employees, along with a minimum of 9 months of RN experience.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current appropriate state licensure.
  • Must meet practice requirements in all states of employment.
  • Entry-level for RNs with less than 2 years of nephrology nursing experience within the last two years or for RNs with a BSN and less than 1 year of nephrology nursing experience within the last two years.
  • Minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse is preferred.
  • A minimum of 6 months of nephrology experience is required before working independently without a qualified dialysis RN.
  • 6 months of dialysis experience is required to be on-call.
  • Hemodialysis and/or ICU experience is preferred.
  • Successful completion of Fresenius Education and Training requirements for new employees.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of CPR BLS Certification.
  • Must meet all conditions of employment, including passing the Ishihara's Color Blindness Test.
  • Successful completion of all annual required education/training/competencies.
  • Successful completion of ongoing training and education as assigned or required.
