Inpatient Dialysis Care Technician

OBJECTIVE:
To function effectively as a vital member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, ensuring the delivery of safe and efficient dialysis treatment for designated patients in alignment with FMCNA policies, established procedures, and relevant regulatory standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (FMCNA RN), promptly reporting and documenting any unusual incidents, patient feedback, or concerns.
- Contribute to maintaining a secure and hygienic working environment, actively participating in the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction.
- Assist in achieving Total Area Productivity (TAP) targets.
- With verified competency, prepare and prime equipment as instructed by the Fresenius Nurse for various renal replacement therapies.
- Greet assigned patients and inquire about their well-being since their last treatment, communicating any concerns to the FMCNA RN.
- Assess vascular access for functionality and report any anomalies to the FMCNA RN.
- Collect necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight, alerting the FMCNA RN to any irregularities.
- Perform vascular access cannulation, communicating any challenges or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Calculate and input individual patients' dialysis machine settings for Ultrafiltration (UF) goals, treatment duration, and Sodium (Na) modeling as prescribed.
- Ensure the activation of appropriate safety alarms, including narrow venous limits (NVL 160).
- Document accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Initiate renal replacement therapy according to physician orders, including setting blood flow and dialysate flow rates as directed.
- Collect and label specimens, ensuring their timely delivery to the laboratory in accordance with facility protocols.
- Monitor intradialytic issues and provide interventions as directed by physician orders or the FMCNA RN, observing the patient's response to therapy.
- Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform all necessary functions for treatment discontinuation, ensuring thorough documentation.
- Report any changes or unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Document any interventions for atypical patient conditions and the patients' responses to those interventions.
- Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment, including monitoring arterial and venous pressures, providing necessary interventions, and documenting any unusual findings.
- Discontinue dialysis treatment following established protocols.
- Assess the patient prior to the termination of venous access, ensuring hemostasis and applying appropriate dressings, while evaluating the patient before discharge and reporting any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
- Conduct and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, including weight and vital signs.
- Perform additional duties as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This role involves physical demands and environmental conditions typical of healthcare settings. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
- Daily responsibilities include desk work, patient interaction, and collaboration with facility staff and physicians.
- Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations may be necessary.
- Meetings may require travel.
- The work environment is characteristic of a healthcare facility, with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials is possible.
- This position involves direct patient care, requiring heavy lifting and assistance with patient mobility, with support from equipment aids and/or coworkers.
- Frequent prolonged standing is required, and the employee must be able to bend over. Occasional assistance with moving equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. and lifting chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. may be necessary.
- A two-person assist program and material assist devices are available for heavier items.
EDUCATION:
A High School Diploma is required.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 1 - 2 years of relevant experience.
- Certification in Clinical Hemodialysis (CCHT) is required.
