PhD Researcher in Urban Soundscapes (65%; d/f/m)
We are seeking a dedicated PhD researcher to investigate the intricate relationships between biophonic and anthropogenic sounds alongside environmental characteristics, particularly focusing on vegetation diversity, urban infrastructure, and avian diversity. This doctoral research is part of a larger initiative examining urban green spaces and their soundscapes, with a focus on their implications for human health and wellbeing. The research will employ terrestrial mobile laser scanning (TLS) and automated recording units (ARUs), complemented by sophisticated modeling techniques, to assess songbird diversity indices and their correlation with greenspace structures and the surrounding urban environment. The findings from this research will inform the development of strategies and guidelines aimed at fostering multifunctional and biodiverse urban green spaces.
Project Overview:
Urban green areas play a vital role in promoting biodiversity and enhancing human health. The soundscape of urban environments can serve as a crucial indicator of biodiversity and ecological conditions, significantly influencing human wellbeing. However, the interplay between urban characteristics (both green and grey infrastructures) and biodiversity, as well as soundscapes, remains underexplored. This research aims to elucidate how urban soundscape features relate to the structural complexity of urban green spaces, sound-based biodiversity within these areas, and their impact on human health. By integrating urban ecology, environmental psychology, acoustics research, and urban planning, this project seeks to provide valuable insights for the planning and management of urban green spaces in Munich and beyond. Through community engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, we aspire to advocate for biodiversity-focused health interventions.
