Urban Green Spaces and Soundscapes Researcher
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to investigate the interconnections between biophonic and anthrophonic sounds and environmental features in urban green spaces. The research will focus on the relationship between vegetation complexity, urban infrastructure, and bird diversity, with an emphasis on developing tools and guidelines for creating multifunctional and biodiverse urban green spaces in Munich.
Project Background:
Urban green spaces play a critical role in both biodiversity and human health. Sound and the urban soundscape can be indicators of biodiversity and environmental conditions, and can have a profound impact on human health. However, the relationship between urban features and biodiversity, as well as soundscapes, is understudied. The CitySoundscapes project aims to identify how the characteristics of urban soundscapes relate to the structural complexity of urban green spaces, sound-based biodiversity in urban green spaces, and human health.
Research Objectives:
- To investigate the relationship between vegetation complexity and bird diversity in urban green spaces
- To develop tools and guidelines for creating multifunctional and biodiverse urban green spaces in Munich
- To explore the impact of urban soundscapes on human health and wellbeing
Requirements:
- Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g. environmental psychology, urban ecology, acoustics research)
- Excellent research skills and experience with data analysis and modeling techniques
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
Working Conditions:
The position is part-time (65%) and fixed-term for 3 years. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich and will involve working with terrestrial mobile laser scanning and automated recording units.
