We are seeking a dedicated PhD researcher to investigate the intricate relationships between biophonic and anthropogenic sounds and environmental characteristics, particularly focusing on vegetation diversity, urban infrastructure, and avian diversity. This doctoral research is part of a larger initiative aimed at exploring urban green spaces and their soundscapes, with a particular focus on their implications for human health and wellbeing.
Research Objectives:
The primary goal of this research is to employ terrestrial mobile laser scanning (TLS) and automated recording units (ARUs) alongside sophisticated modeling techniques to quantify songbird diversity indices and their correlation with greenspace structures and the surrounding urban landscape. The findings from this study will be instrumental in developing guidelines and tools for the creation of multifunctional and biodiverse urban green spaces.
Project Overview:
Urban green spaces play a vital role in supporting biodiversity and enhancing human health. The soundscape of urban environments can serve as a valuable indicator of biodiversity and ecological conditions, significantly influencing human wellbeing. However, the connections between urban features (both green and grey) and biodiversity, as well as soundscapes, remain underexplored. This research aims to elucidate how urban soundscape characteristics relate to the structural complexity of urban green spaces, sound-based biodiversity, and their effects on human health.
By integrating urban ecology, environmental psychology, acoustics research, and urban planning, this project seeks to provide actionable insights for the effective planning and management of urban green spaces, particularly in Munich and similar urban settings. Through active citizen engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, we aim to foster biodiversity-oriented health interventions.
