We are offering a PhD position for an enthusiastic candidate dedicated to exploring the connections between biophonic and anthropogenic sounds and their environmental contexts, with a particular focus on vegetation diversity, urban infrastructure, and avian diversity. This doctoral research is part of a larger initiative aimed at understanding urban green areas and their soundscapes, and how these elements correlate with human health and well-being. The project will employ terrestrial mobile laser scanning (TLS) and automated recording units (ARUs), alongside sophisticated modeling techniques, to assess songbird diversity indices and their associations with greenspace structures and the surrounding urban environment. The findings will contribute to the development of strategies and guidelines for creating multifunctional and biodiverse urban green spaces.
Project Overview:
Urban green spaces play a vital role in promoting biodiversity and enhancing human health. The sounds within urban environments can serve as indicators of biodiversity and ecological conditions, significantly influencing human well-being. However, the interplay between urban characteristics (both green and grey) and biodiversity, as well as soundscapes, remains underexplored. The CitySoundscapes project aims to elucidate how urban soundscape characteristics relate to the structural complexity of urban green spaces, sound-based biodiversity within these areas, and their impact on human health. By integrating urban ecology, environmental psychology, acoustics research, and urban planning, we strive to provide valuable insights for the planning and management of urban green spaces. Through community engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, we seek to advocate for biodiversity-focused health interventions.
