Research Position: PhD Candidate in Urban Soundscapes and Biodiversity
The Technical University of Munich invites applications for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the CitySoundscapes project. This interdisciplinary research project investigates the intricate relationships between urban soundscapes, vegetation complexity, and biodiversity.
Project Overview:
Urban green spaces are vital for both ecological health and human well-being. Soundscapes within these environments can serve as indicators of biodiversity and environmental conditions, significantly impacting human health. The CitySoundscapes project aims to unravel the connections between urban soundscapes, the structural complexity of green spaces, sound-based biodiversity, and human health.
Research Focus:
Your research will focus on quantifying songbird diversity indices and their relationship with greenspace structure and surrounding urban landscapes. Utilizing advanced technologies such as terrestrial mobile laser scanning (TLS) and automated recording units (ARUs), you will contribute to a deeper understanding of how soundscapes influence the restorative power of urban nature.
Methodology:
This project combines urban ecology, environmental psychology, acoustics research, and urban planning. Your work will involve data collection, analysis, and modeling techniques to generate valuable insights for urban green space planning and management in Munich and beyond.
Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a strong academic background in ecology, environmental science, or a related field. Experience with acoustic monitoring techniques, data analysis software, and GIS is desirable. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential for success in this collaborative research environment.
