About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled researcher to join our team at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) - Helmholtz Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work on a project focused on numerical ocean modelling, specifically investigating the energy transfers between mean flow, mesoscale eddies, tides, and shear instabilities. They will use high-resolution regional and global ocean general circulation model solutions to diagnose and quantify numerical mixing parameterisations and resolution on energy transfers in dense overflow systems.

The position is part of a collaboration between the Alfred Wegener Institut for Polar and Marine Sciences, the Institute of Oceanography (IfM) at the University Hamburg, and the University Bremen. The project aims to put the applicant in a position to suggest solutions that mitigate the diffusive effects of numerical mixing in dense overflows.

Your Profile

We are looking for a researcher with a PhD in physical oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or related fields. Essential skills include advanced computer literacy, programming skills, and scientific computation experience in complex FORTRAN and PYTHON codes in a UNIX/LINUX environment. Experience with numerical modelling and large data sets is also required.

This is a full-time position, limited to 2 years, with an estimated salary of approximately €48,000 - €65,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. We offer flexible working hours and mobile working up to 50% of regular working hours.
