In the Faculty of Philosophy I, the following position is to be filled at the Institute of Sociology from 1 October , which is a central component of the profile "Cultures of Knowledge and Education" currently being established at MLU:

W1-Professorship with Tenure Track to W2 „Sociology of Education“

The duties of the position holder include the independent representation of the field in its entire scope in research and teaching as well as active participation in academic self-administration. Experience in the areas of empirical educational research (e.g., institutional educational research at the intersection of education and society), related special sociology (e.g., sociology of migration and/or sociology of professions), and in the acquisition of external funding is expected. Therefore, experience in trans­disciplinary cooperation with disciplines of the social sciences as well as in collaborative projects especially with sciences of education and pedagogics is desirable. The applicant should have a proven track record in relevant quantitative and/or qualitative empirical research (e.g. mixed methods and international comparison). Participation in the Center for School and Educational Research and academic self-administration is expected; participation in the Center for Social Research Halle or in the Institute for Higher Education Research or in the university core area research "Society and Culture in Motion" and the thematic profile “Cultures of Knowledge and Education” is appreciated.  

The professorship is responsible for the modules in educational sociology in the Bachelor and Master programmes in Sociology (Faculty of Philosophy I) and Educational Science (Faculty of Philosophy III). The professorship teaches in these programmes 4 SWS in the first three years, 6 SWS in the second three years and 8 SWS after the transition to a W2 position. The future post holder will be able to teach in German for these degree programs.

Duties and responsibilities are stipulated in section 34 of the Saxony-Anhalt State Law of Universities.

Applicants must fulfil the appointment requirements in accordance with section 40 of the Higher Education Act of Saxony-Anhalt. In particular, the prerequisites for appointment are a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude and a special aptitude for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate. As a rule, the time between the final doctoral degree examination and the application for this junior professorship should not exceed six years.

Junior professorships are filled on the basis of a temporary civil service contract, initially for a period of three years. The position shall be renewed for a further three years conditional upon a positive mid-term evaluation. If the tenure evaluation is positive, the position is transferred to a permanent W2 professorship without a new call for applications and - provided the general civil service requirements are met - the appointment is made as a civil service for life, or alternatively the position is transferred to a permanent employment contract under private law.
