Group Leader position for the FLASH Free Electron Laser in the Accelerator Division at DESY

- Management of the group and leadership of the staff, including team building and promotion of diversity
- Leadership of machine research at FLASH, especially in seeding schemes, and strong partnership with photon science in research for novel FEL methods (nonlinear, attosecond, seeding)
- Develop a vision for the FLASH facility, jointly with the Head of FLASH in the photon science division and the Accelerator Division and Photon Science Division directors.
- Manage the financial and personnel planning of the group
- Planning of operation and further development of the FLASH facility in cooperation with the technical groups of the accelerator division and with the photon science division
- Ensure quality and manage safety aspects of the machine and its operations
- Coordinate and supervise the work performed by other groups at FLASH in support of the machine
- Collaborate with national and international partners
- Coordinate the machine aspects in the collaboration with the European XFEL
- Disseminate research results in conferences and high-impact journals

About you:
- Completed scientific university studies in physics, engineering or comparable disciplines, PhD desired
- Extensive professional experience in the field of accelerator physics and accelerator operations
- Proven expertise in the physics of particle accelerators and free electron lasers, especially with respect to external seeding
- Experience in implementing projects in a multi-project organisational structure
- Experience in personnel/project/operations management and supervision of a diverse team consisting of engineers, technical staff, scientists and students
- Excellent communicator and motivator
- Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential; basic fluency in German is desirable but not mandatory
