Internship in the field of high-precision road mapping for automated driving from September 2024

Autonomous driving is one of the strategic areas of development at Mercedes-Benz AG. To implement this function, the central Drive Controller accesses a wide range of sensor information and merges it for reliable longitudinal and lateral control of the vehicle.
Map data is required for autonomous driving and other driver assistance functions. Map data is one of these sensors and enables an extended view of the route in front of the vehicle, which cannot be captured by conventional sensors such as radar, lidar and cameras. The map data is hosted on a backend external to the vehicle and kept up to date there using sensor data from a vehicle fleet and traffic information from corresponding services.
These are some of the challenges you will face:
Feasibility analysis for the use of OSM (Open Street Map) data as reference maps Analysis and familiarization with the OSM format Converting the OSM format / OSM maps into suitable formats for further processing Presentation of OSM data in the QGIS tool Documentation and know-how transfer Qualifikationen Degree in computer science, computer engineering, geoinformatics, electrical engineering, technical cybernetics, control engineering, automotive engineering or a comparable technical course of study Confident written and spoken German and English skills Programming skills (e.g. Python) Confident handling of MS-Office Commitment and ability to work in a team Analytical mindset and strategic way of working Ideally knowledge of QGIS or geo-information systemsAdditional information:
