In Munich Re’s Corporate Property & Engineering department, the Civil Engineering section is responsible for the underwriting, development and profitability of the Civil Engineering portfolio. This comprises an underwriting function with a focus on continental European and US markets and a governance function for the worldwide Civil Engineering portfolio. Moreover, it is also a focus point for R & D, technological developments, pricing tools and IT platforms.

This position is also responsible for aligning strategies, developing new products, developing the value proposition and setting the risk appetite for our own portfolio but also in strong connection with the network where Civil Engineering business is written throughout Munich Re’s Facultative & Corporate (F & C) division.

This wide range of responsibilities will be challenging at a technical, management, intercultural and personal level but also offers a unique opportunity to lead our global Civil Engineering strategic approach.

Your job
- Developing and profitably steering theCivil Engineering portfolio both for our own P & L as well as the wider F & C Civil Engineering portfolio
- Becoming the face of Civil Engineering for the market and within F&C through thought leadership (e.g. via seminars, workshops, specialist presentations, technical publications), including for innovative civil topics (e.g. BIM/digital twins, use of drones, etc.)
- Expanding and managing a high-quality underwriting team of seven underwriters and interfacing with the wider F & C teams
- Developing your team and fostering high-performance team culture including developing new talents
- Enhancing or developing common strategies, risk management frameworks (incl. PML setting) and steering the risk appetite
- Serving as the interface to other stakeholders for the Civil Engineering product (e.g. corporate underwriting or central reserving)
- Enhancing our role in non-CAR products (e.g. inherent defects insurance or parametric covers)
- Supporting and enhancing our automatisation approach (e.g. Cert2Go)
- Leading global projects to enhance our Civil Engineering value proposition
- Making Civil Engineering an integral part of our Property & Engineering product suite including interfaces to the Power and Property teams (e.g. for hydro projects or Civil Engineering completed risks)

**Profile**:

- University degree in Civil Engineering
- Solid track record of management and leadership experience advantageous
- International underwriting and cultural experience
- Strong technical competences including for challenging object codes (e.g. tunnels, bridges, wet risks)
- Experience in innovation-related topics (e.g. automated underwriting)
- Developing an in-depth knowledge of Munich Re’s underwriting tools as well as reporting tools and understanding of Munich Re’s steering instruments (e.g. value-based management, multi-year analysis)
- Profound analytical and conceptual capabilities along with an innovative and creative approach
- Ability to create a high-performance team culture
- High level of empathy and client skills, motivation and work ethics
- Fluent German and English needed; other languages are a bonus
