Vor 6 Tagen
Welcome to the exciting world of at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO Our international, multidisciplinary team of scientists is working to usher in the next era of the quantum revolution. Together, we research, develop, and design innovative quantum algorithms that push the boundaries of what is possible- especially in the natural sciences such as chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering. Our goal is to transition from the current NISQ (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) era to large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers. In doing so, we combine theoretical foundations with practical applications and implement our algorithms on state-of-the-art quantum hardware. Step into a dynamic environment where creativity and research go hand in hand Become part of a team that is not only shaping the future of quantum computing, but also having a real impact on the science and technology of tomorrow. Together, we can unlock the secrets of the quantum world and develop groundbreaking solutions to complex challenges What you will do In this position, you will work on the development of quantum algorithms specifically designed for fault-tolerant quantum computers, with a focus on partial differential equations (PDEs). Your tasks may include the following: Further development of discretization techniques: Optimize the spatial discretization methods used in our reference (arXiv:2509.02429). This includes the application of higher-order finite difference methods, the inclusion of non-periodic boundary conditions, and the investigation of alternative geometric forms. Extension to non-stationary PDEs: Work on applying the above methods to non-stationary PDEs, in particular the wave equation. Here, you can explore various time integration techniques such as time-step methods, spectral methods, or Krylov subspace schemes, as well as their quantum algorithmic counterparts. Implementation and numerical experiments: Put theoretical quantum algorithms into practice and perform numerical experiments using quantum computing SDKs such as Qiskit, Pennylane, Qrisp, or Guppy. Experiments on real quantum computers: Perform practical experiments on real quantum computers and use high-performance computing (HPC) systems for large-scale simulations. What you bring to the table You are a registered student in a master's program in mathematics, physics, computer science, or similar areas and are looking for a topic for your master's thesis In-depth knowledge of quantum computing, quantum information, and quantum computer programming OR advanced knowledge of numerical analysis, especially in the numerics of PDEs and matrix calculations. Proven experience with Python, experience with quantum computer programming or scientific computing libraries is an advantage. High level of creativity and initiative with the ability to work independently and autonomously in an interdisciplinary team. Fluent English skills. German skills are an advantage but not required. What you can expect You can expect challenging and varied tasks in an innovative research environment. We also offer you: Insights into application-oriented research and current, innovative topics The opportunity to write your master's thesis in an inspiring environment A pleasant working atmosphere in a motivated team Equal opportunities, accessibility, and diversity Responsible tasks that will help you develop your skills State-of-the-art technology and working environment Mobile working and flexible working time models Transparent and fair remuneration Connection to our student network Sports facilities at the University of Stuttgart We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. The monthly working time is 40 hours. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff. With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future. Interested? Apply online now.
