About Quantum Brilliance

Quantum Brilliance is the world leader in room-temperature quantum computing using synthetic diamonds. Our unique vision is to make quantum computing available as an everyday technology, from data centres to remote and mobile systems like autonomous robots and satellites. In contrast to quantum computers that fill a room, we are developing quantum accelerators with more compute power than a classical supercomputer but in a form factor smaller than a lunchbox.

Founded in 2019 by leaders in diamond quantum science from the Australian National University, we are a full-stack quantum computing company. An Australia-German company, our HQs are in Canberra and Stuttgart, with additional locations across eastern Australia and southern Germany. We are working with global technology leaders to develop quantum computing applications, integrate quantum with high-performance computing, solve materials science challenges and develop ultra-precise semiconductor manufacturing and quantum control techniques. We are backed by leading venture capital funds and major research and technology institutes.

The Mission

The Quantum Information Architect [QIA] is a central and decisive role to define the architecture and requirements of the future generations of our integrated quantum devices and align these with the overall digital-based quantum computing system architecture. The QIA defines the necessary designs and requirements to translate logical quantum circuits to native HW gates and the diamond quantum processor layout to operate these native gates in a most efficient and performant way.

The QIA drives the theoretical analysis and simulation activities behind the design and development of our integrated quantum devices, and interacts strongly with our quantum engineering teams that develop fast and efficient control, initialisation and readout methods of NV spin systems on a physical level, as well as the SW application team developing quantum algorithms.

About the Role

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing innovative quantum architectures to efficiently run logical gates and circuits on a NV-based information processing platform.
  • Defining, and verifying through modelling, the requirements for the quantum (qubit characteristics, qubit connectivity, architecture symmetries) and system control (temporal and frequency response times and resolutions, amplitudes and dynamic range) hardware, to be suitable for a targeted application/use-case.
  • The modelling of the performance of QB's quantum devices (e.g., gate and measurement fidelity, noise, error, and cross-talk characterizations) and develop strategies to achieve optimal performance.
  • Identify and design symmetries in NV-based quantum architectures towards the simplification of the quantum circuits for enabling algorithm optimization.
  • Craft experiments based on NV centres in diamonds, contribute to our growth targets by scaling the number of qubits, testing and simulating new qubit architectures, and exploring new control and readout technologies.
  • Work closely within an cross-functional team of quantum engineers, device designers and developers, solution and system architects.
  • Supporting the growth ambitions of Quantum Brilliance by helping others to gain technical expertise.

About You

The successful candidate is a quantum physicist with a strong background in spin-based quantum systems, ideally NV-based ones. You enjoy learning new fields and concepts, can quickly understand higher-level problems and architect clean and concise solutions.

Essential skills and experience:

  • PhD degree in a relevant field in spin physics and/or quantum computing.
  • Postdoc or industrial experience in quantum computing applications and the design and execution of quantum circuits.
  • Experience in leading teams of quantum experts.
  • Programming experience (in Python), working with hardware systems.
  • Knowledge on how quantum algorithms are implemented on spin qubits, i.e., decomposition of a quantum circuit into a series of native gate operations.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse team of experimental physicists, architects and software engineers.
  • Strong English language skills, good communicator and team player.

Desired skills and experience that will help you excel:

  • Familiarity with NV centers in diamond is a strong plus.
  • Theoretical knowledge of dynamics of complex systems.

  • Working with bright and engaging colleagues, aligned to a common goal. In many academic settings, there are 1-2 people at most working on a particular project. At Quantum Brilliance, there are more people on your project and closely related topics, creating a vibrant environment with lots to learn and share. It also provides an environment to develop your skills in project management and coordination.
  • Collaborating with colleagues around the world. We currently have labs in 6 locations across Australia and Germany, and collaborate with leading research institutions and quantum technology companies.
  • Continuous learning. You're expected to keep pace with the state of the art in the field, reading papers and (virtually) attending conferences. If you're switching fields, you'll need to rapidly get up to speed with the literature history, something we will help with but that you are expected to drive. There are further exciting learnings in project management, team leadership, and business operations.
  • Research leadership. As you complete projects and build your understanding of the company and its R&D programs, you will be increasingly expected to provide input to help shape roadmaps and targets for subsequent R&D projects. This can include pitching projects to follow-up on discoveries made during previous projects.
  • Creating IP and patenting your inventions.
  • Publishing. We'll publish from time to time as a company, including technical white papers and scientific papers targeting top-tier (Nature, Science) journals, with authorship following the usual scientific conventions. In contrast to an academic environment, the publishing is driven by strategic considerations rather than as our primary 'product'.
  • Conferences and outreach. We provide opportunities for presenting at and/or participating in conferences, workshops and careers events.
  • Lecturing and teaching. You won't be convening undergrad courses, but you will still have plenty of opportunities to share your knowledge within the team. This can include providing technical leadership and mentoring to other team members, doing projects with brilliant interns, and regular internal technical group meetings.
  • Research environment. Our labs are co-located with universities or public research institutions, at sites across Australia and Germany.
  • Applying for grants. Depending on your role with QB and the funding/partnership opportunities, this might still be a thing. But there tends to be a much higher success rate, shorter timelines to funding outcomes, and it's no longer a live-or-die thing for your career.
