PhD Researcher in Climate-Tectonics Interactions

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and contribute to the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network INITIATE. The successful candidate will work on building a Digital Twin of the Corinth Rift to unravel conditions responsible for the localization of deformation at present-day.

The PhD researcher will be responsible for gathering and compiling data on the distribution of sedimentary units and integrating those via potential field modelling and gravity data to build a model of the crust-mantle boundary. They will also use existing tomography to map heterogeneities in the temperature and density distributions in the lithospheric mantle, and front-end the derived model against physics-driven simulations to constrain the thermomechanical state of the Corinth Rift.

The ideal candidate will have a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics or Geosciences, and knowledge of thermal-hydraulic-mechanical physical processes, geophysics and deformation mechanisms. They will also have experience with 3D structural modeling and numerical methods, and good programming skills. Additionally, they will be fluent in English and have a strong publication record.

Requirements:

  • Master degree in Physics, Mathematics or Geosciences
  • Knowledge of thermal-hydraulic-mechanical physical processes
  • Knowledge of geophysics and deformation mechanisms
  • Experience with 3D structural modeling and numerical methods
  • Good programming skills
  • Fluent in English

  • Early Stage Researchers
  • Not been awarded a doctoral degree
  • Not resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the reference date
