Position Overview
The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in a collaborative research initiative between prominent institutions, focusing on the intricate dynamics of alternative splicing within the realm of single-cell transcriptomics. This position entails engaging in innovative and interdisciplinary partnerships with various research teams, enhancing our understanding of gene expression and its implications in health and disease.
Project Focus
Alternative splicing is a crucial mechanism that diversifies the transcriptome, influencing nearly all physiological processes and holding significant relevance in conditions such as cancer and neurological disorders. Recent advancements in methodology have opened new avenues for exploration, particularly in achieving single-cell resolution, which is essential for uncovering the complexities of splicing regulation.
The candidate will be responsible for developing and refining computational methodologies aimed at identifying and quantifying alternative splicing events using data derived from various single-cell transcriptomic techniques. Key research questions include:
- What is the extent of alternative splicing variability among individual cells of the same type?
- How does this variability correlate with gene expression patterns?
- In what ways is alternative splicing dysregulated in specific cell types across different disease contexts?
- How do alternative splicing profiles contribute to the identity of distinct cell types?
- What regulatory mechanisms govern microexons and other cell type-specific exons during differentiation?
- How conserved is alternative splicing across cell types, and can we identify novel isoforms unique to rare cell populations?
Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in Bioinformatics, Functional Genomics, or Molecular Biology, with a strong emphasis on computational analyses of single-cell RNA sequencing and alternative splicing. Experience in software development and collaborative research with non-computational scientists will be highly beneficial. While expertise in neurobiology and evolutionary genomics is not mandatory, it will be considered an asset.
