Geotechnical Research Associate

We are currently seeking a Research Assistant (m/f/d), EG 13 TV-H, temporary, full-time (currently 40 hours per week) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, specifically at the Institute of Structural Engineering - Geotechnical Engineering.

Application Deadline: To be determined.

This position is part of the DFG project RE 3881/6-1, focusing on "Piled rafts under cyclic horizontal loading" and is initially limited to three years in accordance with applicable regulations. There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to pursue a PhD.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engagement in the aforementioned project, particularly in:
  • Conducting small-scale model experiments
  • Performing soil mechanical laboratory tests, including cyclic triaxial assessments
  • Executing numerical simulations utilizing the finite element method (FEM)

Qualifications:

  • A strong Master's or Diploma degree in civil engineering, with the degree expected to be obtained by the recruitment date.
  • In-depth knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in applying numerical methods in geotechnical contexts, especially FEM.
  • Experience in executing and analyzing soil mechanical laboratory tests.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient knowledge of German, both written and verbal.
  • High motivation, a self-directed working style, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Familiarity with FEM software such as ABAQUS, NUMGEO, or Tochnog Professional, including the integration of UMATs.
  • Understanding of soil material behavior under cyclic loading conditions.
  • Knowledge of foundation bearing behavior under cyclic loading.
  • Experience in conducting and evaluating model tests.
