Position Overview
We are seeking talented individuals for our Institute for Solar-Terrestrial Physics, focusing on space weather research. The role encompasses various scientific disciplines including physics, geophysics, and geoinformatics.

Role Expectations

Space weather significantly influences both space-based and terrestrial technological systems. Its effects can disrupt communication and navigation, posing security risks and economic challenges. Our department is dedicated to developing methodologies for assessing and forecasting the impacts of space weather on these systems, collaborating with academic, industrial, and governmental partners.

Your Contributions
Your role will involve applied research that enhances our understanding of how space weather interacts with critical infrastructure. This research supports sectors such as navigation, communications, aviation, space exploration, and energy distribution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enhance and manage an automated, scalable processing system for space weather analysis at the Ionosphere Monitoring and Prediction Center (IMPC).
  • Select and process relevant observational data to study the effects of space weather on technological systems.
  • Develop and implement scientific methodologies for integrating ground-based and satellite data into space weather models.
  • Automate and validate techniques for measuring and predicting the impact of space weather on technical systems.
  • Design and manage systems for distributed data analysis and measurement infrastructure.
  • Investigate long-term impacts of varying space weather conditions.

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with:

  • A completed scientific degree (Master/Diploma) in natural sciences (e.g., meteorology, physics, geophysics) or engineering (e.g., computer science, geoinformatics).
  • Foundational knowledge of space weather effects on technical infrastructures.
  • Experience in developing models related to the ionosphere.
  • Practical experience in modular software development for automated data acquisition and analysis.
  • Proficiency in Linux and programming languages such as Python, Go, Rust, or C++.
  • A proactive approach to learning and problem-solving.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel for work.
  • Fluency in English and good knowledge of German.
  • Experience in distributed data management and APIs is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with virtualization and containerization technologies is a plus.
