Position Overview
We are seeking dedicated professionals for our Institute for Solar-Terrestrial Physics in Neustrelitz, focusing on the realm of space weather research.
Space weather significantly influences the functionality and dependability of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial technological systems. Its impacts can lead to considerable disruptions in modern communication and navigation frameworks, posing heightened security challenges, economic setbacks, and diminished quality of life.
The Space Weather Impact department is committed to developing and exploring methodologies for assessing, evaluating, and forecasting physical and technical parameters that elucidate the repercussions of space weather on technological infrastructures. Our findings are instrumental in enhancing the understanding of space weather's implications on society and technology, as well as in devising potential countermeasures in collaboration with scientific, industrial, or governmental entities.
Your role will encompass applied research aimed at enriching the scientific and technical comprehension of the interactions between space weather phenomena and our critical infrastructures, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. This work will aid operators of essential services in navigation, communication, aviation, space exploration, and electrical grid management.
Key ResponsibilitiesYour specific tasks will include:
- Advancing and managing an automated, horizontally scalable processing system for the analysis and representation of space weather at the Ionosphere Monitoring and Prediction Center (IMPC).
- Selecting and processing relevant observational data to investigate the impacts of space weather on technical systems and infrastructures.
- Developing and implementing scientific methodologies for data assimilation from both ground-based and space-based sources into space weather models.
- Automating and validating techniques for measuring, evaluating, and predicting physical and technical variables that characterize the effects of space weather on technological systems.
- Creating and orchestrating systems for distributed data analysis and globally distributed measurement infrastructures.
- Investigating long-term effects stemming from continuous and spontaneous variations in space weather conditions.
We expect candidates to possess:
- A completed scientific university degree (Master/Diploma) in natural sciences (e.g., meteorology, physics, geophysics, geodesy) or engineering disciplines (e.g., computer science, geoinformatics, data science, data engineering and analytics) or other relevant academic backgrounds.
- Fundamental knowledge of space weather effects and their influence on technical infrastructures, particularly in satellite navigation and HF communication.
- Basic understanding in the development and/or application of models to describe the ionosphere/plasmasphere.
- Practical experience in developing modular software collaboratively for automated data acquisition, scientific analysis, and interactive visualization of multidimensional space weather data utilizing CI/CD and Gitlab/Github.
- Experience with Linux and proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Go, Rust, or C++.
- A strong motivation to learn about new topics and processes while identifying and communicating data-driven solutions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, coupled with a pragmatic, hands-on approach.
- Willingness to travel, both nationally and internationally.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, and good knowledge of the German language.
- Experience in distributed data management, including data modeling and interoperable data provisioning (e.g., using relational database systems like PostgreSQL, PostGIS, and TimescaleDB), S3 object storage, and API development (e.g., HAPI, OGC) is advantageous.
- Practical experience in virtualization, containerization, and orchestration of hardware and software components (e.g., KVM, Kubernetes, Docker/Podman, Argo Workflow, Ansible) is a plus.
