Control Systems Engineer

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is looking for two qualified control systems engineers to become part of the CSE Control Engineering Group within the Directorate of Engineering. This department comprises approximately 50 skilled software and control engineers who collaborate closely with various other departments at ESO, as well as numerous national and international institutes and industrial partnerships, to define and develop cutting-edge research facilities for ESO's observatories.

Primary Responsibilities

In this role, you will work in close collaboration with various ESO project teams, particularly focusing on the ELT program. Your main responsibilities will encompass:

  • Assisting ESO projects in the design, analysis, testing, and optimization of control systems.
  • Supporting the ELT program throughout all phases of its lifecycle, including design, construction, integration, and commissioning.
  • Designing, implementing, and commissioning PLC-based control systems.
  • Conducting performance tests and verification processes.
  • Overseeing industrial contracts, providing technical support to suppliers, conducting design reviews, ensuring PLC code quality, performing functional tests and simulations, and participating in factory acceptance tests and onsite commissioning activities.

Reporting Structure

You will report directly to the Head of the Control Engineering Group within the CSE department.

Required Skills and Experience

Essential qualifications for both positions include:

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in control engineering, specifically in the development, analysis, design, implementation, and onsite commissioning of PLC-based control systems, preferably in an industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in PLC systems: familiarity with PLC and HMI/SCADA systems and programming in at least three of the following areas: Siemens S7 TIA Portal, WinCC / WinCC OA, ProfiNet, Beckhoff TwinCAT 3, EtherCAT, OPC UA.
  • A solid engineering background in one or more of the following areas: electrical/electronics design, electrical cabinet design, and E-CAD systems, preferably EPLAN.

Preferred Skills and Experience

Desirable qualifications for both positions include:

  • Experience with servodrive systems, particularly Sinamics S120.
  • Experience working in international and multicultural teams.

Additional Required and Preferred Qualifications for Position 1

  • Experience with PLC-based safety applications: Siemens Safety Advanced and/or Beckhoff TwinSAFE.
  • Knowledge of hazard analysis, SIL/PL assignment, compliance checks, verification, and acceptance procedures.
  • Familiarity with functional safety applications and relevant standards such as IEC 62061 / EN ISO.

Additional Required and Preferred Qualifications for Position 2

  • Experience with HVAC and building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of thermal control, industrial chiller plants, and process instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with power distribution systems (LV, UPS, MV).

Educational Background

Candidates should possess an advanced university degree in electrical or control engineering, or an equivalent qualification. A first-level university degree combined with relevant work experience and/or additional technical qualifications may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.

Language Proficiency

A good working knowledge of English is required for this position.
