PhD Position in the Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology

The Behavior Genetics Unit at the Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology is seeking applications for a PhD Position on a fixed-term basis (36 months), with a salary scale of 13 TVöD (65%).

This role involves collaboration with A/Prof. Dr. Miriam Mosing and Prof. Dr. Fredrik Ullén to explore the intricate connections between creativity, substance use, and mental health within a population-based sample.

While there has been considerable speculation regarding the impact of drug use in creative fields, such as professional music, empirical data on the exact relationships and effects remains limited. This project aims to clarify these associations, particularly focusing on the influence of genetic factors.

Additionally, the link between creativity and mental health issues has been documented, yet the specific role of substance use in this dynamic is still not well understood. Our research will leverage a longitudinal, population-based twin cohort to investigate these relationships, taking genetic confounding into account.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Fredrik Ullén, the Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology at the MPIEA employs music as a framework to dissect the brain mechanisms that drive human expertise, skill acquisition, and creativity.

Requirements:

  • A Master's degree in behavior genetics, psychology, public health, biostatistics, or a related discipline.
  • High proficiency in both oral and written English.
  • A robust background in statistical methods, including structural equation modeling, twin and family designs, and/or molecular genetics.
  • Experience in managing registry or large datasets is highly advantageous.

The research will take place at the MPIEA in Frankfurt am Main, in close collaboration with the Swedish Twin Registry and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, as well as the Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC).

The MPIEA offers a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and international research environment, with English as the primary language of communication. The institute is situated in a prime location with excellent infrastructure, providing a modern workplace with flexible hours and a supportive atmosphere.

Regular travel to the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm will be part of the role, and a longer research stay at the Amsterdam UMC is anticipated.

The position is set to commence as soon as possible, with a standard working time of 39 hours per week. Compensation will be in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD Bund, E 13 [65%]), supplemented by an annual bonus.
