International Security Director

The Global Integrity Organization is actively looking for a International Security Director (m/f/d) to oversee and enhance our worldwide and multi-regional projects related to Advocacy and Legal Support Centers (ALSCs) while assisting local chapters' national ALSC efforts.
In numerous regions, the mission of Global Integrity to combat corruption influences the interests of authorities, influential corporations, or dishonest individuals. As a coalition of anti-corruption advocates functioning in over 100 nations, our chapters occasionally encounter considerable dangers, including threats, harassment, and defamation campaigns, as well as investigations, legal actions, and cyber threats. These risks are intensified by the growing severity of restrictions on civic freedoms. To effectively manage and reduce security threats for its headquarters and National Chapters, we are in search of an outstanding professional with extensive experience supporting local civil society entities facing risks in various environments to lead the security operations of GIO.
The International Security Director holds primary responsibility for GIO's security operations and its strategic planning and budgeting; they contribute to all facets of GIO's security initiatives, including incident response and crisis management, capacity enhancement on security matters, and providing security guidance to chapters, along with the development, execution, and monitoring of security protocols and resources. They collaborate closely with the headquarters' Global Movement, Technology, Communication, and Legal teams to effectively address the multifaceted threats confronting our organization. The International Security Director is part of a two-person team and offers support and oversight to the International Security Coordinator.

Band: compensation aligned with GIO's internal salary framework; for this role corresponding to band PF3, starting compensation EUR 55,650 gross annually based on relevant experience
Contract Duration: Currently, we can offer a limited employment contract for a duration of 2 years, with the possibility of extension based on organizational needs, proven performance, and confirmed funding, along with interest in a stable and long-term collaboration.
Working Hours: full time [100%; 40 hours per week]
Location: Global Integrity Organization (GIO), Berlin – with international travel [up to approximately 30%]
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE ROLE
Based in the Executive Office team and reporting to the Executive Director, the International Security Director will:
Act as the primary contact for safety and security for personnel at the headquarters in Berlin and for our National ChaptersEnhance capacity for security risk management in National Chapters through workshops, guidance, and feedback on security strategiesEstablish and maintain a network of security contacts within the MovementLead crisis management initiatives and assist chapters in addressing incidents with advice on effectively mitigating the various risks they encounterDevelop, implement, monitor, and revise necessary security policies and documentationCoordinate with the Technology team on matters related to information security and cyber safetyContribute to the communications rapid response unit that formulates responses to incidents in the form of statements and press releases as appropriateIn collaboration with the Fundraising team, assist in fundraising efforts to support the work of GIO's security team, including drafting or reviewing funding proposals and reporting to donorsMonitor local and regional security conditions and liaise and coordinate with National Chapters and other partners in affected regionsProvide content oversight to the Security CoordinatorCANDIDATE PROFILE
To excel in this role, candidates should meet the following criteria:
Extensive experience supporting the security and protection needs of NGOs involved in advocacy, human rights, or journalismExperience in addressing direct risks arising as retaliation for advocacy and casework – whether physical, legal, or reputationalFamiliarity with the security and protection strategies developed within the human rights defenders protection communityA minimum of 7+ years of experience in security and protection, preferably including global headquarters settingsA proven track record of providing advice and capacity development in security, both on risk management processes and on effectively mitigating the diverse risks that advocacy organizations may faceExperience with risk analysis in regions such as Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East is a strong advantageExperience in establishing and managing crisis response functions is desiredStrong communication skills and protocol awareness are required for conveying complex security and risk issues to non-experts, operational decision-makers, and external partnersWritten and spoken fluency in English; working knowledge of Spanish or French is a plusUndergraduate degree or equivalent education in a relevant field; additional professional certification in security or risk management (e.g., CPP) is desiredWHAT WE OFFER
