Position Overview
The University of Hamburg, recognized as one of Germany's leading research and educational institutions, is seeking to appoint a W3 Professorship in Pathogen Genomics Bioinformatics. This role is situated within the BNITM and integrated into the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will represent bioinformatics in both research and education, focusing on pathogenomics.
Key Responsibilities
The professorship encompasses various responsibilities, including:
- Conducting research in bioinformatics related to infectious agents, which includes:
- Analysis of gene expression regulation
- Identification of novel pathogens
- Phylogenetic analyses
- Analysis of single-cell sequencing data
- Application of unsupervised machine learning methods
- Engaging in new and existing collaborative projects with the BNITM, international partners, and within the Leibniz Association.
- Leading a newly established cross-sectional department of bioinformatics at the BNITM, with a focus on capacity building in collaboration with partners from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).
- Providing training for scientific personnel employed in these regions.
- Teaching responsibilities include two hours of lectures per semester at the University of Hamburg, specifically in the bioinformatics program with an emphasis on pathogenomics.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for an internationally recognized expert with a strong background in the relevant research area, particularly concerning neglected and poverty-related diseases. The ideal candidate will possess:
- A completed degree with a doctorate in computer science, medicine, biology, or biochemistry, complemented by additional training in computer science.
- Extensive experience in conducting bioinformatics analyses.
- Outstanding scientific qualifications and a proven track record in bioinformatics research related to infectious agents.
- Publications in high-impact journals.
- Experience in securing substantial third-party funding.
- The ability and willingness to teach in English, along with qualified teaching experience in bioinformatics related to tropical infectious diseases and emerging infections.
- Involvement in master's programs and postgraduate education with relevant content.
- Significant experience in personnel management and academic self-administration.
