About the Institute: At the Institute of Energy Technologies – Electrochemical Process Engineering (IET-4), we leverage over 20 years of expertise in electrochemical energy conversion to lead innovative solutions for clean and sustainable energy conversion devices. Among commercially available electrolysis technologies, Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) stands out as one of the most promising.

Key Challenges: A major challenge in stack design is the selection of the optimal sealing and sealing concept. Inadequate sealing of the stack can lead to internal and external leaks, potentially resulting in the formation of a hazardous explosive mixture. The sealing is particularly stressed by the pressure and temperature cycles experienced during operation. Furthermore, the prohibition of fluorinated materials may exclude already established sealing materials from use.
