A Day in The Life

Based at the Medtronic office, as a Principal Software Product Owner, you will spearhead the software development initiatives within the Software Center of Excellence for the Surgical Robotics Organization. You will collaborate with various stakeholders from a comprehensive position within the Software Engineering Center of Excellence to prioritize digital interaction development tasks. By gathering and analyzing inputs, including customer feedback and user experience research, you will develop and refine the backlog of features and assist in organizing high-priority features into sprints and software increments, utilizing Agile SAFe methodology. You will work closely with UX designers, systems engineers, hardware teams, and Human Factors specialists to define user needs and usability requirements, while testing and enhancing usability across all interactions. Your focus will be on developing next-generation instruments for the Hugo Surgical Robot. You will operate in a dynamic and highly regulated environment alongside a team of skilled software developers and test engineers, collaborating with cross-functional teams to design and develop the next generation of features for the Hugo system, encompassing requirements definition, design, code implementation, unit testing, and software and system verification and validation. You will also engage in Agile activities, including but not limited to Increment Planning and Sprint Planning.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Scrum Team through the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) for medical devices in accordance with IEC 62304.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders and cross-functional teams to prioritize work based on business needs.
  • Oversee and prioritize the Surgeon Console Team backlog using JIRA.
  • Identify and prioritize features, enhancements, and fixes based on user feedback, market analysis, and business value.
  • Work with stakeholders to gather insights, provide updates, and align product strategies with their expectations.
  • Guide the software development scrum team in sprint and increment planning, advocating for value-focused user stories, and establishing Definition of Done and acceptance criteria.
  • Balance and drive consensus on inputs from multiple stakeholders, anchoring priorities in direct user research.
  • Observe usability testing and operating room procedures.
  • Participate in risk assessment and requirements development.
  • Develop world-class software for the Hugo RAS System using SIMULINK and C++.
  • Collaborate across functions with manufacturing and production teams.
  • Assist in documenting software architecture and design details, unit testing, anomaly tracking, and reporting.
  • Work closely with hardware and systems partners, including integration, testing, quality, and system verification teams.
  • Adhere to medical device regulations (IEC 62304).

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or training in Agile SAFe methodologies.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented design and modern C++ programming.
  • Hands-on experience in developing, debugging, and troubleshooting software issues.
  • Understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and real-time applications.
  • Experience in software architecture design, including writing design documents and creating flowcharts and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) process and tools (e.g., JIRA, Bitbucket, Stash, Confluence, JAMA, Git, CMake).
  • Experience with test-driven development methodologies and unit testing.
  • Background in working with technical software teams.
  • Understanding of software concepts and the software development life cycle using IEC standards.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing design approaches for multiple projects or complex systems.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project priorities and requirements while maintaining clear communication.
  • Experience providing guidance and training in Agile SAFE best practices.
  • Experience in software development within the medical devices industry is a plus.
  • Familiarity with surgical robotics is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience with software development using C++ is a plus.
  • Experience with control systems development using SIMULINK is a plus.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards such as ISO 13485 and 14971, GMP guidelines, and FDA regulations is beneficial.
  • Experience in risk management analysis of software, ideally using SW FMEA techniques.
  • Experience in a global or multi-development site environment is a plus.
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields. A master's or Ph.D. degree in a related discipline is preferred.
