In this pivotal role, you will be part of an elite team of engineers specializing in mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines, focusing on the ongoing advancement of a globally recognized Robotic Assisted Surgery platform within the Surgical Operating unit.

Responsibilities Include:

Based at Medtronic's office, as a Principal Software Product Owner, you will spearhead software development initiatives within the Software Center of Excellence for the Surgical Robotics Organization. Your role will involve collaboration with various stakeholders, utilizing an all-access perspective within the Software Engineering Center of Excellence to prioritize development tasks related to digital interactions. By gathering and analyzing feedback, including Voice of Customer and User Experience research, you will curate and refine the backlog of features, organizing high-priority items into sprints and software increments, adhering to Agile SAFe methodologies.

You will work closely with UX designers, systems engineers, hardware teams, and Human Factors specialists to define user requirements and usability standards, ensuring thorough testing and refinement of all interactions. Your contributions will focus on the development of next-generation instruments for the Hugo Surgical Robot, all within a dynamic and highly regulated environment alongside a talented team of software developers and test engineers.

Key Duties:

  • Lead the Scrum Team through the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) for medical devices, in compliance with IEC 62304.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders and cross-functional teams to prioritize tasks based on business objectives.
  • Manage and prioritize the backlog for the Surgeon Console Team using JIRA.
  • Identify and prioritize features, enhancements, and fixes based on user insights, market research, and business impact.
  • Engage with stakeholders to gather input, provide updates, and align product strategies with their expectations.
  • Guide the software development scrum team in sprint and increment planning, ensuring value-driven user stories and clear acceptance criteria.
  • Balance and harmonize inputs from multiple stakeholders, anchoring priorities in direct user research.
  • Observe usability testing and operational procedures.
  • Participate in risk assessments and requirements development.
  • Develop high-quality software for the Hugo RAS System utilizing SIMULINK and C++.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams.
  • Contribute to the documentation of software architecture, design details, unit testing, and anomaly tracking.
  • Work closely with hardware and systems partners, including integration and testing teams, Quality Assurance, and System Verification.
  • Adhere to medical device regulations (IEC 62304).

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Agile SAFe training or experience is preferred.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented design and modern C++ programming.
  • Hands-on experience in software development, debugging, and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and real-time applications.
  • Experience in software architecture design and documentation.
  • Knowledge of SDLC processes and tools (e.g., JIRA, Bitbucket, Stash, Confluence, JAMA, Git, CMake).
  • Experience with test-driven development methodologies.
  • Experience working with technical software teams.
  • Understanding of software concepts and the software development life cycle as per IEC standards.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize design approaches across multiple projects or complex systems.
  • Strong communication skills to navigate fluid project priorities and tight timelines.
  • Ability to distill software requirements from system requirements.
  • Experience in providing guidance and training in Agile SAFE best practices.
  • Experience in the medical devices industry is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of surgical robotics is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience with software development in C++ is a plus.
  • Experience with control systems development using SIMULINK is a plus.
  • Familiarity with highly regulated environments and relevant guidelines (ISO 13485, 14971, FDA regulations, IEC 62304).
  • Experience in risk management analysis of software, ideally using SW FMEA techniques.
  • Experience in global or multi-development site environments is a plus.
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related disciplines. A Master's or Ph.D. is preferred.
