The MOMOBIO-2 collaborative research project, funded by BMBF under the BioDivGesundheit2 initiative, addresses the growing concerns related to the release of antibiotics, biocides, toxins, and microplastics, which adversely affect microbial diversity and promote the spread of antibiotic resistance. This poses significant risks to both human and animal health. Additionally, climate change and other anthropogenic factors exacerbate these issues.
The primary objective of the MOMOBIO-2 project is to generate comprehensive omic-based datasets and models to monitor and predict changes in urban microbiota and its biodiversity, particularly along the wastewater streams of Hamburg and urban water bodies. We aim to utilize shifts in microbial biodiversity as indirect indicators of human and animal health.
The selected candidate will model the functional diversity of microbial communities using a process-based ecological approach, simulating the effects of various environmental stressors on community composition. This model will be employed to forecast the prevalence of potential pathogens relevant to human health, integrating experimental findings from other components of the MOMOBIO-2 project.
The modeling of functional diversity will be based on population dynamics of diverse microbial functional types characterized by key traits, utilizing existing eco-evolutionary models. The model will be calibrated with data on reaction rates, and the simulated outcomes will be validated against observational data gathered from other project work packages. The focus will be on evolving resistomes, xenobiotic gene loads, and virulence factors, as well as the propagation of antibiotic resistance in microbial communities along the flowpath toward the Elbe river in response to varying stressor levels.
Candidate Profile
A university degree in a relevant field such as Ecology, Biology, or Microbiology is required at the start of the contract. The ideal candidate should possess advanced knowledge and experience in at least two of the following areas: Ecology, biogeochemistry, soil science, and microbiology. Proven skills in numerical modeling and scientific writing are essential. Additional desirable attributes include teamwork, motivation, independent thinking, and familiarity with Unix-like operating systems and associated software. Proficiency in both oral and written English is necessary.
