The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) is dedicated to advancing our understanding of plant systems, contributing to the evolution of sustainable and resilient horticulture. Our research spans the intersection of plants, humans, and the environment, addressing critical global challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, urbanization, and food security.

Within the HORTSYS-Controlled Environment Horticultural System research group, we focus on developing model-sensor based decision support tools aimed at optimizing resource use in protected cultivation. Our primary research involves model-based monitoring through systems modeling and sensor technology, striving for resource-efficient production methods.

Effective climate control in greenhouses often relies on preventive measures with significant safety margins or reactive strategies that attempt to mitigate damage post-factum. It is known that physiological damage from plant stress can be reversible to a degree, and mild stress can positively influence plant quality and yield.

Typically, decisions regarding interventions are based on experiential knowledge, utilizing standard sensor data. However, advanced sensor technologies have been developed for precise measurement of plant physiological responses, enabling detailed stress marker assessments that can be integrated into soft-sensor and sensor-based decision support systems.

To enhance our team’s capabilities in model-based crop monitoring and to support the goal of resource optimization in greenhouse cultivation, we are seeking a motivated and dedicated PhD Researcher in Climate Monitoring and Control Systems for resource-efficient production.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct plant physiological experiments in climate-controlled environments.
  • Develop mathematical models of crop physiological processes, preferably using Matlab.
  • Design systems for decision support and control strategies.
  • Prepare scientific publications for high-impact journals as part of the PhD thesis.
  • Supervise undergraduate and master's students.
  • Present research findings to an international scientific audience.

Candidate Profile:

  • Master's degree in greenhouse horticulture, plant physiology, modeling, or a related field.
  • Interest in technology applications within greenhouse and indoor farming.
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn computer programming for plant modeling and data analysis.
  • Strong communication skills in English.
  • Interest in modeling with Matlab, R, or similar programming environments.
  • Willingness to travel for short or long-term research collaborations.
  • A proactive, open-minded, and adaptable individual.
  • Ability to thrive in an international research environment.
