Research Scientist in Agricultural Systems Modelling The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of plant systems, thereby fostering the development of sustainable and resilient horticultural practices. Our research operates at the intersection of plants, humans, and the environment, tackling systemic and global challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, urbanization, and malnutrition. We aim to provide scientifically grounded recommendations for healthy agri-food systems and sustainable environmental interactions.

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious Research Scientist specializing in Agricultural Systems Modelling to contribute to our goal of optimizing resource use in protected crop production through advanced systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Developing process-based mathematical models for agricultural systems.
  • Conducting simulation studies of the modeled systems.
  • Supporting life cycle assessments (LCA) at both process and product levels in collaboration with project partners.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Actively participating in the coordination and engagement of the EcoNutri project.
  • Preparing scientific publications and presenting findings to both the international project consortium and scientific audiences.
Qualifications:
  • PhD focused on systems modelling within a horticultural or agricultural context.
  • Strong expertise in process-based mathematical modelling of crop production systems.
  • Proficient in mathematical analytics with the ability to translate processes into equations and systems.
  • Experience in systems modelling, particularly with programming in Matlab.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessment methodologies, preferably with knowledge of SimaPro.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills in English.
  • A proactive, flexible, and positive attitude, with the ability to take initiative.
  • Willingness to integrate into an international working environment.
