Research Scientist in Agricultural Systems Modelling The Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) is dedicated to advancing the understanding of plant systems, contributing to the evolution of sustainable and resilient horticultural practices. Our research operates at the intersection of plants, humans, and the environment, tackling global challenges such as biodiversity decline, climate change, urban development, and food security. We aim to provide scientifically grounded recommendations for healthy agri-food systems and sustainable environmental interactions.

We are seeking a passionate and driven Research Scientist specializing in Agricultural Systems Modelling with a focus on innovative phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) cycles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop process-based mathematical models for agricultural systems.
  • Conduct simulation studies of the modeled systems.
  • Support life cycle assessments (LCA) at both process and product levels in collaboration with project partners.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Actively participate in the coordination and engagement of the EcoNutri project.
  • Prepare scientific publications and present findings to both the international project consortium and the scientific community.

Qualifications:
  • PhD with a focus on systems modelling in horticultural or agricultural contexts.
  • Strong expertise in process-based mathematical modelling of crop production systems.
  • Proficient in mathematical analytics with the ability to translate processes into equations and systems.
  • Experience in systems modelling, preferably with programming skills in Matlab.
  • Knowledge or interest in life cycle assessment, ideally with familiarity in SimaPro.
  • Excellent organizational and English communication skills.
  • A proactive, flexible, and positive attitude, with the ability to take initiative.
  • Willingness to integrate into an international working environment.
