PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Inpatient Services Registered Nurse CAP 1 is an introductory role within the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is essential for delivering and coordinating proficient care, which includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients. Responsibilities may involve delegating appropriate tasks to direct patient care personnel, including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a vital member of the kidney disease healthcare team, this role engages in decision-making, educational initiatives, leadership responsibilities, and quality enhancement activities aimed at improving patient care outcomes and operational efficiency.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

All tasks and responsibilities are to be executed in alignment with Fresenius Kidney Care policies, procedures, nursing standards, and applicable regulations.

  • Executes all fundamental functions under the guidance of the Supervisor and with support from the Educator, Preceptor, or in collaboration with another Registered Nurse.
  • Conducts ongoing, systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during, and after treatment for assigned patients, documenting findings in the patient medical record, adjusting treatment plans as necessary, and notifying the Supervisor, Physician, and the patient's primary nurse.
  • Evaluates and documents the educational needs of patients and families to provide both initial and continuous education.
  • Identifies deviations in patient status from normal and communicates with relevant healthcare team members for further insights.
  • Directs and ensures safe and effective patient care for assigned patients according to prescribed treatment protocols.
  • Assesses daily patient care requirements and collaborates with direct and ancillary care staff as necessary.
  • Initiates and coordinates communication with both FKC and Non-FKC dialysis providers and relevant contracted facility personnel to ensure continuity of care.
  • Implements, administers, monitors, and documents patient responses to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notifying the physician and blood supplier of any adverse reactions.
  • Administers medications as prescribed, documenting medical justification and effectiveness.
  • Initiates and assists with emergency response protocols.
  • Acts as a resource for the healthcare team, participating in training and orientation for new staff as assigned.
  • May be tasked with providing specialized nursing care instruction to facility staff as per contractual obligations.
  • May assist in an Outpatient facility on an as-needed basis.
  • Required to fulfill CAP requirements for advancement.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

  • This role involves direct patient care that frequently requires heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, and ambulation support.
  • The position necessitates prolonged periods of standing and the ability to bend over.
  • Occasionally, the employee may need to move equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance and lift chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 lbs. to heights of 5 feet.
  • The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
  • Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
  • The role may require performing essential functions in various locations with similar physical demands and working conditions.
  • Daily responsibilities include desk work, computer usage, and interaction with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Travel to training and meeting sites and between assigned facilities is required.
  • Participation in on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be necessary based on program needs.

SUPERVISION:

Oversight of Patient Care Technicians/LVN/LPNs/RNs as a designated Nurse in Charge is assigned after meeting all of the following criteria:

  • Successful completion of all FKC education and modality-specific training requirements for new employees.
  • A minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • 6 months of experience in acute dialysis as a Registered Nurse.

EDUCATION and LICENSURE:

  • Current appropriate state licensure.
  • Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.
  • Must meet practice requirements in all states of employment.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Entry-level for RNs with less than 1 year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the last two years.
  • Minimum of 9 months experience as a Registered Nurse; 12 months preferred.
  • 6 months of acute dialysis experience preferred.
  • Hemodialysis and/or ICU experience preferred.
