About The Role

The Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology Transaction Counsel will be an integral member of HARMAN's IP legal team, contributing significantly to the company's strategic objectives. This role involves delivering expert IP legal guidance to various Strategic Business Units (SBUs), including but not limited to Automotive, Lifestyle, Digital Transformation Solutions, and Sales and Supply Chain functions. The position reports to the Director of IP Europe and collaborates closely with other legal team members to address operational and business matters that affect the global enterprise.

We seek a proactive and self-sufficient IP attorney who excels in a fast-paced setting. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to manage intricate negotiations and operate independently with minimal oversight.

Proficiency in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating IP and technology-related contracts, as well as experience in IP litigation and software matters, is essential. Strong communication and intercultural skills are necessary to effectively engage with key customers, suppliers, and external stakeholders, working alongside legal and compliance leadership to support HARMAN's business objectives.

Your Team

This role will collaborate strategically with the senior legal team and provide support to functional and/or SBU clients.

What You Will Do

Managing Legal and Business Risk

Draft, negotiate, and provide counsel on complex IP agreements, including non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), development agreements, collaboration agreements, purchasing agreements, and licensing agreements with customers, suppliers, and partners. Offer advice and guidance to business units on a broad spectrum of IP issues, particularly focusing on global IP challenges. This encompasses software-related matters, especially concerning Open-Source Licenses and Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) in communication technology. Oversee and manage a global patent docket in specific technology areas, ensuring alignment with global guidance from the patent operations team and external patent attorneys. Support IP litigation efforts and provide strategic advice on litigation approaches. Engage directly with product and engineering teams to facilitate new product and project development, ensuring robust IP protection. Assist with IP divestitures, mergers, acquisitions (M&A), and licensing activities. Utilize strong analytical legal skills and demonstrate awareness of risk and compliance when supporting complex projects or making strategic decisions.

What You Need

A law degree with outstanding academic performance and admission to the bar in Germany or another EU Member State. Demonstrated analytical and project management skills, with a focus on task completion and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders. Excellent judgment and decision-making capabilities, with potential involvement in broader strategic initiatives for the IP department. A minimum of 5 years of relevant IP experience, preferably in-house or within a law firm. Proficiency in English and preferably German.

What is Nice to Have

Experience in the automotive or other highly regulated high-tech sectors. Familiarity with working in a global matrix organization. Knowledge of software, particularly open source and licensing. Experience with patent prosecution and application processes.
