We are the UKE - the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf [Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf]. A pulsating centre of health in the heart of Hamburg. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to understand the basic cellular mechanisms that control cell migration in a high-risk high-gain frontier knowledge project that aims to understand how cells move in health and disease.

The CellComM laboratory started 2 years ago at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). We are hosted at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology (IBMZ), and we have an extensive national, and international network of collaborators.

These 2 PhD positions are offered within the framework of a Human Frontiers Scientific Program Grant (HFSP). A high risk, high gain project that aims to unveil the complex regulations of the membrane potential, ion channels, cytoskeletal dynamics and organelle crosstalk during directional cell migration by combining experimental and theoretical approaches in an international collaboration with chemists and physicists.

CellComM Lab members will have access to state-of-the-art equipment for super resolution live cell imaging at the IBMZ and at the imaging core facilities of the UKE, including the UMIF.

A 3 years term position to be filled as early as April 2023, but later could be discussed.
- Perform classic migration experiments, as well as setup new techniques and methods.
- Cell culture in 2D, 3D in combination with microfluidics and micropatterning.
- Monitor organelle dynamics during cell migration and its intracellular signaling.
- Perform intensive microscopy imaging, including super resolution.
- Advanced imaging analysis, and development of new protocols and research projects.
- Training and supervision of new members of the laboratory.
- Involvement in the different stages of publishing.
- Attend national and international conferences.

Darauf freuen wir uns
- Diploma or Master degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary research and theoretical approaches, as well as in high-risk, high-gain frontier of knowledge projects.
- High motivation and curiosity to learn programing oriented to advanced imaging and data analysis. Preferred, experience in use of imaging analysis tools (i.e. ImageJ, Serial EM).
- Experience with 2D and 3D culture of endothelial and cancer cells, and live-cell imaging microscopy to study cell migration and organelle dynamics.
- Preferred, experience in the use of microfluidics and micropatterning techniques.
- Preferred, experience in live-cell imaging and new microscopy techniques and methods (i.e. holotomography, MINFLUX).
- Preferred, expertise in cell polarity and/or membrane-less organelles, or immune cells, or neurons.
- Preferred, expertise and/or publications in the field of electron microscopy and analysis of organelle morphology.
- Preferred, expertise in immunofluorescence analysis and analysis to study organelle interaction (i.e. Proximity Ligation Assay).
- Preferred, expertise in analysis of endoplasmic reticulum stress.
- Scientific integrity, collaborative spirit, resilience, and politeness at all times.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
