DESYs Laser Science and Technology Group is responsible for research, development and operations of high-power ultrafast lasers for DESYs large scale facilities. High power, high repetition rate ultrafast lasers are essential for generating and manipulating of electron beams and for most of the science experiments at the X-Ray Free Electron Laser facilities FLASH and European XFEL. At European XFEL we are currently launching an R&D project with the goal to produce attosecond soft
- and hard X-ray pulses. For this project, a carrier-envelope phase stable, few cycle, high energy, high-repetition rate ultrafast laser needs to be overlapped with an high energy electron beam. One challenging task is to transport this few cycle CEP stable laser to the interaction point with low distortions in spectral and temporal phase and to develop the necessary diagnostics. For R&D on this topic we are seeking a highly-motivated, seif-driven laser scientist to join the team.
- About your role:
- Analyze and study beam transport for high energy few cycle ultrafast laser systems and develop a laser beam-transport line for the European XFEL
- Develop on-line diagnostics for spatial and temporal phase of ultrafast laser beams
- Develop and test novel ultrabroadband mirror coatings for few cycle ultrafast lasers
- Perform R&D on few-cycle CEP stable ultrafast lasers and attosecond X-ray generation

- About you:
- Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent qualification
- Experience with ultrafast optics design and CEP control
- Experience with spatial and temporal phase diagnostics of ultrafast laser beams
- Experience with CAD, laser simulation and optics design tools
- Experience in controls system integration and programming skills (Python) are a plus
