Ultrafast lasers represent a key enabling technology for research efforts at DESY. They are used to generate and manipulate electron beams at the free electron laser facilities XFEL and FLASH, enable pump-probe experiments at those facilities and provide exciting options for future attosecond pulse production at the European XFEL. One of our research topics focuses on generating mJ-level TW laser pulses by nonlinear spectral broadening concepts followed by post-compression. This way, cost and energy-efficient lasers can be used to generate few-cycle pulses with high conversion efficiency and at high average power. Within this project, we target the development of a state-of-the-art CEP stable few-cycle laser source which will be used to modulate a high-energy electron beam to explore novel concepts for attosecond X-ray pulse generation at the European XFEL. For this joint project between DESY and the European XFEL, we are seeking a self-driven, highly motivated laser scientist.
- About your role:
- Work in an interdisciplinary team of accelerator physicists, engineers and laser scientists
- Develop a high-average and high peak-power few-cycle laser source employing extreme-scale post-compression
- Advance laser post-compression technology to large compression factors, high throughput and few-cycle pulse durations.
- Develop CEP control for post-compressed laser pulses
- Explore beam transport of the few cycle laser beam to the interaction point with the electron beam
- Contribute to exiting developments of new concepts for attosecond pulse generation using Free-Electron Lasers

- About you:
- Ph.D. or Dr. degree in physics, electrical engineering or equivalent qualification
- Excellent knowledge of ultrafast laser technology and nonlinear optics
- Proven scientific track record in ultrafast optics including experiences within experimental works and numerical simulations
- Experience with ultrafast pulse characterization tools, optics simulation tools and CEP-stable lasers is a plus
- Experience with laser pulse post-compression techniques is a plus
