PhD student (f/m/x)
- Earthquake Station Bensberg

The Earthquake Station Bensberg is opening a PhD position
(f/m/x) at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy in the
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Univer
- sity of Cologne. The station is continuously monitoring the
local seismic activity in the Lower Rhine Embayment and
the Northern Eifel region in Germany for nearly 70 years
and has extended its network to more than 40 stations.
It has grown to a nationally and internationally renowned
observatory, thanks to the research activity in the field of
Earthquake Geology and Archeoseismology.

YOUR TASKS
- Analysis of seismological data derived from the Eifel

Volcano Observation Network (EVON) using noise
- or
attenuation-based processing techniques
- Investigate environmental factors on the variability of
elastic parameters in the shallow subsurface, using
active and passive seismic sources
- Site characterization in a dense, seismological network
- National and international collaborations in the Large-N

Eifel project, including research visits at partner insti
- tutes (GFZ Potsdam, ROB and ULB - Belgium, etc.)
- Participation in the routine processing of seismological
data at the station
- Supporting the maintenance of the seismological
network and processing infrastructure
- Teaching duties (two semester hours per week)

YOUR PROFILE
- M.Sc. in Geophysics, Geosciences or Physics (or com
- parable)
- Knowledge in seismological data processing
- Interest in software-based problem solving and

development
- Fluency in English, if necessary willingness to learn

German
- Team-oriented, but self-reliant work skills
- Keen to participate in outreach and public relation

activities
