The five-year joint project FINEST (Use and management of finest particulate anthropogenic material flows in a sustainable circular economy), which is funded by the Helmholtz Association, aims to investigate ultrafine materials of anthropogenic origin such as microplastics, mineral additives and metal-containing dusts with respect to possible recycling options in order to advance a sustainable Circular Economy. The project is coordinated by the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and involves researchers from the Helmholtz Centre Berlin (HZB), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF), the UFZ and the University of Greifswald.
Within the FINEST project, a doctoral position is available for the sub-project MICROPLASTICS, which will address the bacterial conversion of synthetic polymer (plastics) fractions of fine-grained residues (microplastics) to yield valuable products and/or inert residues for safe deposition. In the PhD project, innovative bacterial biocatalysts acting on polymers and/or polymer additives will be isolated and characterised with respect to their catalytic performance. Bacterial strains to be newly isolated from soils taken from sites rich in brittle plastic waste, and already available bacterial strains will be investigated. Bacteria will be characterised physiologically, biochemically and genomically. The identification of biochemical tools the bacteria use for plastic degradation will be carried out with pure model polymers. Later, the behaviour with organic (polymer) fractions of real shredder fines will be tested in degradation experiments.

Subject: Isolation and characterisation of bacteria capable to degrade microplastic and phthalate plasticizers

Your tasks:

- Isolation of bacteria which metabolize target polymers of microplastics (polyurethane PU, polyamide PA, polyethylene terephthalate PET) and plasticizers of the phthalate ester type (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, DEHP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP) using soil samples from a site rich in brittle plastic waste.
- Characterisation of isolated strains physiologically, biochemically, and genomically.
- Identification and characterisation of promising new hydrolytic key enzymes involved in bacterial degradation of plastic polymers and intracellular degradation pathways for phthalate plasticisers.
- Assessment of the applicability of biochemical (enzymatic or whole-cell) treatment of real microplastic samples (e.g. organic fractions of shredder fines, real shredder fines).
- Presentation of results at project meetings, stakeholder events and conferences
- Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

Your profile:

- MSc/Diploma in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a related discipline, ideally with a microbiological focus
- Good knowledge in molecular biology and bioinformatics
- Practical experience with bacterial cultivation techniques and organic analytics is a plus
- High motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team
- Independent and proactive working style
- Excellent command of English is a must, German skills would be an advantage
