Inland waters are an important part of the global carbon cycle because they transport and process large amounts of organic matter (OM) from the terrestrial biosphere. Despite the lack of oxygen, anoxic waters found e.g. in peatlands and lake sediments are very active environments to process OM. Yet, detailed knowledge about chemical and microbiological pathways and controlling factors, ultimately controlling carbon mineralization and sequestration, is lacking. This collaborative project with the Universities of Freiberg and Münster aims to disentangle ecological and biogeochemical drivers that transform OM in anoxic environments by using advanced analytical and big-data methods in combination with field work and laboratory experiments.

PhD Researcher (f/m/x) in biogeochemistry of anoxic freshwaters

Subject: Deciphering organic matter transformation pathways in anoxic environments using ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Working time: 65 % (25,35 h / week), limited for three years.

Your tasks:

- Use of ultra-high resolution FT-ICR mass spectrometry for non-targeted analysis of ultra-complex organic matter mixtures.
- Development of LC and tandem MS methods.
- Participation in field work/sampling campaigns.
- Experimental lab work targeting microbial and chemical transformation of complex organic matter mixtures using stable isotope labelling.
- Development of data processing pipelines for automated evaluation of large data sets.
- Close collaboration with project partners from the Universities Freiberg and Münster.
- Participation in the HIGRADE graduate school, workshops and (inter-)national conferences.

Your profile:

- Master’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or related natural sciences.
- Strong background in analytical chemistry, chemometrics/statistics and programming (R, Python, Matlab)
- Skills in organic (ultra-) high resolution mass spectrometry are highly desirable.
- Very good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and motivated to work in an interdisciplinary team and in a collaborative project.
- Commitment to solution-oriented interdisciplinary research, learning, networking, and career development are mandatory for our new team members.
