The job

Within the Thematic Area - Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology of the UFZ at the Department of Environmental Microbiology in the working group Electrobiotechnology and Leipzig University in the working group Bioactive systems for controlled evolutionary materials (BioMat), we are looking for a PhD student to propel the field of electrobiorefineries. The UFZ and Leipzig University jointly fund the work, and thus the contract will first be for 18 months at UFZ, according to TVöD Bund (remuneration EG 13) and subsequently for 18 months at UL, according to TV-L ((remuneration EG 13). At UFZ, funds are associated with the internal programme transfun of the Department Knowledge and Technology transfer with resources from the Call "Innovation Fund of the Helmholtz Centers" provided by the Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation. The work will be done in the dynamic city of Leipzig in close collaboration with UFZ, Leipzig University and Domo Caproleuna GmbH.

Your tasks

Based on our philosophy to develop electrobiorefineries, i.e. combined microbial and electrochemical process lines for the production of chemicals and energy carriers, this work is devoted to the development of bioprocess for monomer production and covers especially:

- Engineering microbial strains (_Pseudomonas_, _E. coli_ etc.) and consortia for the production of monomers from cyclohexanol and similar compounds.
- Evaluating substrate specificity and whole cell kinetics to determine key reaction parameters for the single reaction steps.
- Development of reactor concepts to perform continuous biotransformation utilizing suspended cultures and biofilms.
- Based on these findings, you will establish a laboratory-scale prototype for the continuous production of monomers.
- Providing high-quality scientific outputs in the form of journal publications and especially technology transfer.

**Profile**:

- Previous experience in whole-cell biocatalysis is a substantial surplus
- Experience in biofilm cultivation systems is desirable but not a must
- Excellent team play, excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- High motivation and excellent organizational skills, desire for technology transfer.
