- The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.
The transparent and sustainable management of scientific data and associated context information (metadata) is essential for good research. Especially in material sciences, we are currently experiencing the increasing use of data-intensive technologies including machine learning methods which require a unified and well-documented data basis. However, research data - especially from interdisciplinary domains - are often inherently heterogenous and standards for their (digital) representation are lacking. To counteract this, tools such as electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) are increasingly applied to support scientists in the standardized digital representation of laboratory inventory and experimental processes and analyses.

- Undergraduate Assistant (M/F/d) for Research Data Management with a background in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Data Management or comparable fields of study

35 - 40 hours/month
Temporary contract for 6 months limited
Hourly wage 12,96 Euro

**Working field**:

- Development of tools and methods for reproducible processing, analysis, and visualization of research data from the field of materials science research and testing
- Extracting, structuring and documentation of research data-related metadata
- Integration of the developed methods into existing pipelines
- Documentation of methods and source code, ideally as open-source software
- Support for further tasks in the field of research data management and/or data science.

**Requirements**:

- Student of computer science, data science, data management, bioinformatics or comparable fields of study, preferably with a bachelor's degree
- Very good programming skills in relevant languages such as Python, R and/or Java
- Experience in interactive scientific data analysis, e.g., with Jupyter Notebooks or Shiny
- Very good oral and written communication skills in English
- Good written and oral communication skills in German
- Responsible and independent way of working

Desired Skills:

- Experience in working with databases
- Experience with collaborative software projects using version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience in software development, web development (backend and/or frontend)
- Interest in materials science and other engineering or related scientific disciplines
