The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. - PhD Position “Digital Twin of Past Warming” (M/F/d)

**Background**
High-resolution simulations exhibit a completely different structure, including eddies, then coarse-resolution models. This allows us to evaluate how the system has reacted regionally differently under different forcing mechanisms, such as the intrusion of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the shelf. Small-scale eddies play an important role in preconditioning and re-stratifying the water column before and after mixing events. This affects deep water formation, melt rates, and the regional and large-scale surface ocean and climate.

**Tasks**
To improve the quality of climate models, high spatial resolution is required around the coasts and ice shelves. This makes traditional ocean-climate models with uniform meshes impractical. Recent developments have considerably improved the computational efficiency and scalability of high-resolution unstructured-mesh approaches on high-performance computing systems.

The following activities will be carried out:

- Specially designed climate simulations will be performed with the Alfred Wegener Institute climate model
- Scientific papers will be written to communicate the results of these simulations
- The results of these simulations will be presented at international conferences

**Requirements**:

- Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as meteorology, oceanography, climate science, physics or mathematics
- Proficiency in programming languages
- A solid understanding of climate physics and paleoclimatology
- Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
