- PhD Position “Deciphering the Seasonal Dynamics of Arctic Marine Eukaryotic Microbial Communities” (M/F/d)
**Background**
The Arctic marine environment exhibits distinct seasonality, yet the details of the seasonal dynamics of Arctic marine communities remain largely unresolved. The MOSAiC drift experiment presented a unique opportunity to study the annual dynamics of ecosystems in the central Arctic Ocean. Based on a comprehensive set of metabarcoding and metagenomic data, this PhD project aims to improve our understanding of the seasonal dynamics of Arctic marine microbial communities and their metabolic potential by linking community taxonomic composition to functional traits. A particular focus will be on understanding the taxonomic and functional factors contributing to bloom formation in the ice-margin zone (MIZ).
**Tasks**
- Harmonize large datasets from different sources (sequencing data, environmental data) for integrated analyses
- Interpret metabarcoding and metagenomic data using multivariate statistics and network analyses
- Reconstruct and analyse eukaryotic metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs)
- Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present at international scientific conferences
**Requirements**:
- Master’s degree in biology, ecology, or a related field
- Experience in handling and mining large datasets
- Experience in analysing meta-omics datasets
- Experience in multivariate statistics, analysis of large datasets, and programming languages (e.g., R or Python)
- Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
