  • PhD Position "Paleo-Ice Sheet Geophysics" (M/F/d)

Background

Analysing the behaviour of ice sheets during extreme warm periods in the geological past can help us better understand future projections of climate change.

The highly dynamic West Antarctic Ice Sheet in warm Pliocene times is particularly relevant for ice sheet contribution to sea level.


Analyses of geophysical, mainly seismic, and drill core data from offshore West Antarctica will be performed to build a development model of regionally varying glacially-controlled sedimentation.

The quantification of these temporal and spatial variations along the Pacific margin of West Antarctica, linked to ice-sheet model simulations, is expected to reveal conditions for regionally varying ice-mass balance effects on sea level changes.


Tasks

  • Compile and analyse large seismic datasets to generate detailed seismic stratigraphy and sequence characteristics, with a focus on the time of the Pliocene
  • Integrate physical property and corelog data from scientific drill sites with seismic analysis to invert for icesheet dynamics processes
  • Reconstruct spatially distributed bottom
- and deep-water dynamics from seismic data and drill core records

  • Collaborate with icesheet and climate modellers to compare and integrate simulations with data results
  • Present results at national/international conferences and in peerreviewed publications

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in geophysics, physics, geology, or geosciences
  • Experience in analysing multichannel seismic reflection data
  • Experience or strong interest in analysing marine sedimentary processes for paleoclimate research objectives
  • Interest in the scientific exchange with an interdisciplinary group of international scientists
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
