For the Graduate School Infection of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI) we are offering a
PhD position in the Department of Viral Zoonoses - One Health at the Leibniz Institute of Virology (f/m/x )
The Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) is an independent research institution for basic biomedical research. As a foundation under civil law and member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute occupies a leading position both nationally and internationally. The LIV offers one doctoral position in the department of Viral Zoonoses - One Health under the supervision of Dr. Nancy Mounogou Kouassi in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Susanne Krauss-Etschmann at the Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) as part of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI). The LCI is a strategic alliance of the North German Leibniz Institutes Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center (RCB) and LIV. The LCI focuses on global infections and links the complementary research of the three Leibniz institutes: tropical and emerging infections at BNITM, bacterial infections of the lung at RCB and viral diseases at LIV. The alliance provides a three-year structured graduate program on Infection as an interdisciplinary teaching and training program.
The Department of Viral Zoonoses - One Health, headed by Prof. Dr. Gülşah Gabriel, investigates the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in humans, particularly with regard to risk factors. The aim of the department is to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants that contribute to species transition and to the increased pathogenicity and transmission of influenza viruses in humans. The Krauss-Etschmann group aim to understand how prenatal and early life environmental exposures affect normal lung and immune development thereby modifying the risk to develop asthma and COPD in later life. The joint PhD project between the labs will combine expertise in respiratory virus infections, animal models and asthma immunology.

Your tasks
**Profile**:

- Previous experiences in virology, immunology, molecular and cell biology
- Commitment, team spirit and good communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and ability to plan and execute experiments independently and flexibly
- Very good spoken and written English
- Practical experiences in animal models would be an asset.

The student will be allocated at the LIV in the Department of Viral Zoonoses - One Health with a stay of at least 3 months of the research at the cooperating institute. The position is initially limited for 3 years.
